Overall, I really enjoyed the course I learnt a lot of new skills and now have access to a new environment to dive in. Diving in Holme bank was a fantastic experience seeing the underground mine.

Michael was a fantastic instructor, who was helpful and full of knowledge that he was more than willing to share. He was also passionate about the environments that we would be diving in.

If anyone is interested in getting it overhead diving in the UK then I would fully recommended Michael.

Saying that UK Mine diving is hard work, there is a lot of carrying heavy kit thought not ideal conditions or over long ways, so you do have to work for the diving. But if that doesn’t bother you then it can be incredibly rewarding.

My next step is to get myself some kit bags and a helmet (as after hitting my head on the way into Holme back I’d like to avoid that in future). Then do some more mine diving once the water level has risen in winter id like to go back to Holme bank and see the other side of the mine that we unable to get to. I also want to try and get up to Aber Las and Cambrian mine, with some more experienced divers and explore them.

All the underwater images in theses blog posts where taken by Michael, and a thank you for letting me use them in this blog.

           Dive 1

Once we got to the mainline, we started out missing diver drill. We had already discussed this as a buddy pair, as I had a spool and my buddy had a reel they were going to head off to find the diver while I stayed on the line to provide a point of reference. First thing was to cover our lights and see if we could see anything. Unsurprisingly we did not see anything, so it was time to move on with the drill. While my buddy got her reel out, I dropped an arrow on the line pointing home, and as a team we tied into the line. Then we had an issue, my buddy’s reel jammed, after a minute I signalled her that I would use my spool to do the search and she would act as a lighthouse.

I tied my spool into my arrow and headed off into the Mine, Rob had hidden him self down behind a little wall so we would be unable to see him from the main line. When I reached him, Rob was unresponsive so locked my spool off, grabbed him and dragged him to wards the light of my buddy on the line. Once Rob was on the line, he tried to head off the wrong direction, so I had to take his hand and move it onto our line and give him a shove to head off towards home.

With the drill done we went back and tidied up our reels and spools and headed back to the surface for a debrief. The main feedback was that we did well, communication was good and that if a reel jams underwater then it’s probably best to swap to something else as unjamming it underwater is not an easy task.

           Dive 2

The second dive was going to be the out of gas drill, I was going to be donating first.

We headed part of the way down the line to just get comfortable. Then my buddy gave me the sign that she was out of gas. I donated my long hose got them to hold onto my rear bolt snap so I could keep an eye on them (if I could see). We set off down the line. Once we were on our we closed our eyes to simulate blackout conditions.

This went well other than having to reposition a few times to keep away from the wall. The only major issue was when we got to a large belay and I ended up following part of the belay instead of the line and had to work out which way I should be going. This reinforced that if you think you might be unsure of the way home then the best thing to do is to drop a line marker.

With the drill over I tided up my long hose and we settled back into heading back the other way down the line.

Michael signalled to me that it was my turn to go out of gas, I gave the signal to my buddy and received the long hose (this was not as quick as I would have hoped). My reactions kicked in and I almost went onto the donated regulator, and only caught my self at the last second and put my own back in. Holding on to my buddy’s rear bolt snap and with my eyes closed we made out way out of the mine.

With the drill done we headed back to the surface for a final debrief. Michael was happy with my drill but wanted to go over gas donation with my buddy.

           Dive 3

As I had completed all the drills Michael asked if I wanted to go for a fun dive with Rob. I did so we dropped down and headed along the line to Dive base 2 and back. On the way I removed my line marker from our reel and headed to the surface for the last time.

We all made our way out the Mine, I took one cylinder back on the first trip and most of my dive equipment, as well as keeping my harness on. This meant on my final trip I would only need to bring out one cylinder.

We got changed and then removed the final cylinders from the Mines, and with this we were done with the course.

Michael had a chat with me and asked If I would feel comfortable coming back here or to another Mine without him, I responded that I was. He said that was good and that I had passed.

After 5 days of diving, 500 odd miles covered, and 3 different dive locations. Including two different mines with a lot of walking and carrying kit. I was passed and certified as a TDI Mine diver 1.

The next two days would be diving at Holme bank mine.

We met in the car park at 9am, ready for another day of fun and games.

Some of the old mine workings around the entrance to Holme bank

The walk from the cars to the dive base is a lot shorter today, and while it’s a good 400-500m of Mine passage other than having to stoop for bits of it, its easy going and there’s interesting things to see on the way down. We ferried cylinders and kits down, leaving just harnesses and drysuits on the surface.

So parts inside the mine its self. The winch on the right still works.

To day the plan was to head into the mine and follow the line form dive base 1 towards Dive base 2, on the way out we would have a relaxed swim letting us look at the mine. On the way out each of us would “get lost” and the lead diver would have to notice and then conduct a lost diver drill.

Dive base 1 on the left that we would be using. Middle and right are dive base 2 that we would be swimming towards.

Before we got kitted up, we did a quick refresher on lost diver drills. This was to check that we still remembered the motions for the drill, with the most important being to mark the home side of our reel (The procedure differs to if you are using the classic UK cave diving tool of cloths pegs as line markers as opposed to line arrows that are more common outside of the UK. )

Finally we got into our drysuits, put on our harnesses and headed into the mine. We made it safely to the diving base and proceeded to get our cylinders on, test regulators, lights and check we were ready to head off.

The dive out was amazing, once we had left the head pool, the visibility opened to 15m. Holme bank mine has a lot more stuff in it than Diane. It defiantly looks a lot more man made. We made good time with better teamwork on the way out. I was number two and brining up the rear.

As the water level was so low our main reel only had to go 10m to tie into the main line, which as line markers in place. This meant other than marking our reel with an arrow I didn’t have to put any markers in place.

We made it as far as was practical to go on the line, it was then time to turn around and head back. This meant that I was now number 1, I knew at some point on the way back my buddy was going to disappear.

The procedure for the buddy going missing was that Michael would tell us to turn our torch off and get us to move off the line a little way. Depending on how good our team work was could determine how long the buddy could have been missing for. IF the teamwork is poor and you don’t notice for a while that your buddy is missing, you have a longer search ahead of you.

In this case our teamwork had gotten better so when I noticed that there was as much light behind me, I flashed an OK signal but didn’t get anything in return. At this point I proceeded to turn around and saw that my buddy was now missing.

I then started the process of finding a lost diver. First step was to cover my torch and see if I could see any glows from there torches (now to make this a challenge my buddy’s light was off) while I couldn’t see any torch glow what I could see was the glow of a bright dive computer.

With a bearing to start on I dropped and arrow, this was much harder than yesterday as most Mines and Caves in the UK use 3mm line rather than 1.5m tech line that is common elsewhere. My arrows went on the line but it took more effort. I then tired my search reel into the arrow and turned back to where I had last seen my buddy. In this time, they had moved (Michael got us to move after first being spotted as in reality the buddy may move so you will still have to search). I then proceed to search around, after 30 seconds I located my buddy who was unresponsive. At this I locked of the reel, dropped it and towed my buddy to the line, put their hand onto the main line and pushed them in the direction of home. At this point the drill was ended.

With the team now rearranged so that I was number two we set off again back towards home. After a minute or two Michael prompted me to shut off my light and move off the line into a corner. I then watched as my buddy noticed I was missing and proceed to look for me. Once they spotted me and got there reel out, I was asked to move further down the cave and up to the ceiling. My buddy then spent some time looking for me, and finally found me and brought me back to the line.

Michael asked me to try and head the wrong way down the line but before I could move my buddy had already put my hand on the main line and pushed me towards home. With this the drill was done and we tided up and headed back to the head pool.

We had a quick debrief for the dive with the feedback being to make sure we got used to looking up and around the environment as well as ahead.

With the brief over we dropped back in to do dive 2, this would be to swim the other way up the line going as far as we could until the water level was two low for us to carry on. We would then make our way back and do another lost line drill, this time the drill would only end would we had our hands on our primary line that was joined onto the main line.

The dive out was just as spectacular as the first one with some incredibly large bits of ceiling on the way where the roof has collapsed over time.

Once we reached the end of the line (due to the very dry summer the water level is a good 3-4m lower than it can be in winter). We turned around and headed back. Once we had got to a larger bit of passage we stopped and proceed to do more lost line drills. My buddy went first so I sat on the line and got to watch them do the drill. After a 5 minutes they made it to the line and headed back towards home. Once they made it to our reel and moved over it, we turned around and went back to tidy the reel up.

Then it was my go again. Back on with the blackout mask and Michael pulled me off line. First thing I did was stow my torch to have both my hands free. For this dive I had borrowed a little safety reel from Rob to see how I found it compared to the spool I had been using.

I deployed the reel and after a minute of fighting with the snoopy loop I manged to get it open and found a nice large rock to put I on, I then started to make my search. I started moving and quickly found myself against rocks the side and top of the Mine. This meant I was lower down off the line so I then felt around and started to move back higher up the slope towards where I hoped the line would be.

After a few minutes of slowly searching I felt my arm catch the line. I then wrapped my reel over the line and reeled it in to take up the slack and clipped it onto the line. Finally, I dropped a arrows onto the line and headed in what I hoped was the correct direction. After a little swim I came to our reel and moved over onto our primary line heading out of the water.

With the drill over we again headed back and cleared up my reel and headed out of the mine. Once back in the head pool Michael was happy with our performance. He then asked how we were feeling and if we fancied another short dive to just look around.

           Dive 3

This was only a short dive but me and Michael went along the mainline al the way to dive base 2. This involved a tighter passing though to get there, while nothing major getting 3 people in then turning around in good order can be a bit of a pain especially as the water is lower now.

On the way we had to mark our way on the line as someone looks to have run a new bit of line in a loop around a bit of the mine.

Now line markers and T-junctions are not included in Mine 1/into to cave level and are normally left for Mine 2/Full cave. But in most UK mines rather than jumps being indicated as you would find in the popular caves in France, Florida and Mexico most UK mines have permanent T’s in them. This means if you were to stick to the strict standards in a lot of the Mines at Mine 1 level you would be restricted to 50-100m in most cases. This would severely restrict how much you could do, and prevent any real progress or expiscate post course. Because of this Michel introduces Line marking in Mine 1, allowing you to follow the main line down the Mine past the T junctions. The idea being that until Mine 2, you don’t go off the main line, but are aware of T junctions and can safely mark your return journey.

This meant that with some line markers dropped we could make the 200m journey from our reel to dive base 2. Safely navigating the new line that has been put in. Without this skill we would have been stuck after about 100m of line, and if we had used dive base 2 we would have had 20m before having to turn back due to this new line.

Once we were back on the surface in dive base 1 we took our cylinders off, turned our gas off and put our find and masks out the way. As we would be diving Holme bank again tomorrow, we were leaving our cylinders and equipment at the water’s edge making tomorrow a lot easier.

Due to the max depth of the sight being only 4m we had only used 60ish bar in our 12L cylinders leaving plenty for tomorrow.

Once we were out of the mine and warming up, we set out our suits and undersuit to dry and had a bit of lunch.

We then proceeded to do the dry skills for the next day. Theses were a team lost diver drill, used if when diving in a team of three, one diver is lost and the other two search for them. And a blind out of gas swim.

We ran though theses on some line that Rob had put up for us. The key to the lost diver drill is to communicate and take separate jobs to speed up the process. With one diver putting down a line marker while the other gets their reel ready, one diver then proceeds to search while the other stays on the line to act as a “light house”.

With the blind out of gas swim, the key is trust with the lead diver doing the navigation and moving the out of gas divers’ hands over the belays to help speed up the process. With some practice this can become quite quick and cuts down on each diver having to feel for both sides of the belay and then moving there hands over.

With the diving and drills over for the day I used the opportunity to walk into the little town of Bakewell and enjoy the sun. I also picked up some Bakewell tarts to bring home to keep my partner happy.

We meet in the car park for Dinas Silica Mine at 9:30, I was introduced to my buddy for the week Agnieszka. After a quick briefing, the fun began. The entrance to the mine is about half a mile from the car park, up some very steep paths.

To get the kit there we had to pack it all into tackle bags and carry it up to the mine, between four of us this took 2 trips each to get all the kit there. I quickly found out there is a reason a lot of people use 7L cylinders for this mine, not 12L euros.

Once all the kit made it up to our base camp there was about a 100m walk to the waters edge. To save me having to walk with my 12’s on we carried them down to the water’s edge.

The Pictures above give you some idea about the walk that you have to take from the Car park to the Mine entrance. I used my watch to log the distance and it worked out to about a 3rd of a mile, but with an elevation gained from the car park to the top of the hill being about 150m.

After a final brief of what we would be doing on each dive, it was time to get kitted up. As we were just inside the mine there was a lot of natural light coming in, which made the process quite easy. I did forget that I put my dry glove liners in my undersuit pocket to keep them safe and remembered just as I went to put the gloves on. Which was after I had got my harness and wing on, annoying but not the end of the world.

Once kitted up we made our way down to the head pool ready to go diving.

The aims of the dives today would be for me to run the reel into the mine, with my buddy dropping line arrows as we went. The distance we would go would only be about 60-70 m, but I would have to run the reel the entire way. Once we got to the end of the of the passage, I would lock the reel off and we would make our way out.

On the way out we would run some drills, the first being a primary light failure, and the second being a lost line drill.

The second dive would be to retrieve the reel, and the repeat any drills that we needed to after the first dive.

Sounds simple but I we would soon find out that its not as simple as it seems.

Before putting my cylinders on I used a covenant bit of mine outside of the water for my primary tie off, this meant that if we had to follow the line the end of it was above the water. (You can see the line going into the water on the image above).

Once my cylinders were on, we checked our regulators and wet checked our lights and were ready to go.

I picked up the reel and we headed into the mine, and it was not pretty. Running the line went well, but there was no team communication, after doing the secondary tie off and a belay, Rob called the dive. We had a quick chat on the surface about positioning and communication, then headed down again.

This time it was better I was more aware of where my buddy was, we were communicating better and working better as a team. We made our way in this fashion to the end of the passage, getting to see the mine cart (which was a nice thing to see).

Once the reel was locked off, we turned the dive and headed out. On the way out as expected both our primary lights went out and we went onto our backups. remembering to turn them on before taking them out our harness. With this drill done we continued down the line.

When we were almost out of the passage it was time to do the lost line drill, my buddy went first which meant I had some time to just float around enjoying the view. Once they were done it was my turn.

First on went the blackout mask, then Rob moved me off the line and spun me around. With that it was time to attempt to fine the line. This was a lot harder than when I did it in Vobster, as the water was a cool 7 degrees, so my hands were a little chilly.

After fighting to get my reel sorted out, I tried to find a brick or rock to put my loop around I finally manged to find something that would work. I then set about trying to find the line. I was able to use the fact that I knew roughly where it was in the Mine, and that it was going up a slope to try and work out where it was.

After a few minutes I felt a wall with my hand, knowing that the line should be close I set about trying to find it, after another minute I felt the line and proceed to try and tie my spool off, with cold hands this was a lot harder than it should be but I manged it. Finally, I put an arrow on the line and used the fact that the line should be going up to work out the direction to go. Once I started to move rob let me know the drill was over and I could take the blackout mask off. And we headed up.

With the dive over we headed out the water to warm up a little and do a debrief. I again left my cylinders by the water’s edge to make life easier.

Making our way out into the sun and warming up was nice, and we got some helpful feedback on the dive. We still needed to work on our teamwork, and with my lost line search I needed to just make larger arm sweeps to help me find the line.

Once we were a bit warmer, we made our way back to the water for dive 2.

This was going to be a much more relaxed dive, we just needed to follow the line in, working on our teamwork as we went. This was also a chance to have a look around as on the way in I was busy with the reel.

We made it to the end of the line, and I proceeded to reel in. This went smoothly with my buddy pulling up some of the belays where possible and removing their arrows. We made a stop again on the way out for my buddy to redo their lost line drill.

This was a lot shorter dive, but it was nice to get to see the Mine and the environment I was doing this training to dive in.

Once dive two was over we got changed had a debrief and started to move all the kit out of the mine to the car. It was hard work, but a lot easier to move the kit down the hill then get it up it.

Seeing as I had a bigger car, I offered to take my buddy’s cylinders with me as I had plans to get mine filled on the way from Wales to Derbyshire.

I had phoned a dive shop that was just off my route on Thursday to make sure they would be open when I was going past. Lucky, I gave them a call to confirm as it turns out they were going to shut the shop early and didn’t want to stick around. This was a massive pain as there were no other shops close on my route, and by the time I got close to Birmingham it would be about 6pm so none of them would be open anymore.

I then proceeded to ring around a few different shops and finally found one that was open. The only issues being that it was 20 miles in the wrong direction.

           Journey Underground - TDI Mine 1 - Day 2

Day two we met at 8am at Vobster. Today was going to be running through the line work that I practised yesterday. Only this time I would be in the water.

           Dive 1:

This started with us dropping down to 8m and going to the block house in Vobster. I then preceded to lay a line course out, making sure I did my primary and secondary tie offs. As I didn’t have a teammate this meant that I also had to find each belay and drop arrows as well.

The key to this drill was always to just take things nice and slow making sure that I kept the line under tension. After running the line out, the first skill was to flow the line with an out of air diver. Michael simulated being out of air, and took my long hose (due to changes in training because of COVID, rather than breath from the regulator Michael just held it) and we swam back to the start, with me keeping in contact with the line and Michael making contact with me.

Finally, it was time to follow the line back blind folded. This was to simulate a total loss of visibility, having to follow the line maintaining touch contact.

During the drill I found out why it was important to make sure my belays were secure and that keeping line under tension was important. While following the line back I manged to pull one of my belays off, this meant there was a bit of slack line in the water and this was a lot harder to follow.

In the end I made it back to my starting point, with this done it was time to pull the reel and wind it back in. This was again made more time consuming as without a teammate I had to pull all my cookies up and undo all my belays as well.

With this all tided up it was time to call the dive and surface.

           Dive 2

Dive two involved more line work, I ran a longer course this time with more belaying dropping more arrows and more ups and downs.

With this done it was time for a lost line drill. I was given a blind fold mask and Michel took me off the line. Once I was given the signal, I deployed my backup spool and started my search for the line.

The first step was to just get the double ender of the spool and find a good place to secure the end of it, made much harder for not being able to see. Once I had this in place, I started my search, this was done by waving my arm in front of me and trying to keep low to the ground (as I knew my line was all relatively low down).

After what felt like an age (but was only 2-3 minutes) I felt my line and took hold of it, once this was done I tried to wind my spool in but struggled so clipped it off with more line off than was ideal (looking at the video after I can see there was quite a lot of line, so I will be investing a safety reel in steed to make this easier) I then put an arrow on the line in the direction I was going to go. With that in place I set off down the line…for all of 1 meter as I found one of my line arrows, pointing in the opposite direction.

This meant that I then had to turn around, and deal with my original arrow that was pointing in the wrong direction. Then began the fun of trying to remove the security wrapped arrow, after a few attempts I was unable to undo the front of the arrow, but I was able to remove the back end. With the back end free I flipped it over, so it was pointing the correct direction and set off again.

With the line found this was a repeat of the lost visibility skill from the first dive, following the line in touch contact. With me successfully finding the start of the line the only thing left to do was to wind the reel back in. This time Michael helped by pulling my arrows and pulling some of the belay as well, this made life a lot easier and everything was quicker.

This meant then end to day 2, so I got my cylinders filled and headed off to my next Airbnb in Wales ready for my first overhead dive the next day.

For Christmas 2018 my partner got what is now the most expensive book I have ever owned. I got a copy of Martyn Farrs book “The Darkness beckons.” After reading the history of Cave diving and seeing the beautiful images it got me interested in trying out some overhead diving.

After looking at UK caves I decided that they were not for me (now, things may change), as they are quite small, dark and normally short. They also require a degree of dry caving skills that I currently do not possess.

This led me to looking at UK Mines, these are a different beast to UK caves. They tend to be a bit larger, have clearer water and for the most part do not require any caving skills to get to the entrances, although some of them do require a bit of a walk.

For the first step on my journey I did a Sidemount course with Ian France. You can read my course write up here.

Once this was competed I booked up to do TDI Cavan & Mine 1 with Michael Thomas, I also added a day’s Sidemount skills in before the course to make sure all my skills were where I needed them to be, rather than find out while doing the course.

Day 1 – Sidemount skills day.

The first two days of my course were to be at Vobster Quarry. As this is a bit of a drive and needing to meet there at 8:00 I drove up the day before and stopped an extra night.

So bright and early on Thursday morning I got to Vobster ready for a long few day.

The day started with the obligatory paperwork; one this was out the way the first thing to was to take another look at my harness.

I had made some changes to the harness after my Sidemount course, and we needed to make sure that it was still fitting me ok. Other than having to lengthen the Crotch strap it was all good.

After this it was time to get into the water, we got kitted up and put the cylinders on in the water.

           Dive 1:

We dropped down and swam around to the 6m platforms and it was then onto a skills circuit. This consisted of:

           · Removing the rear bolt snap, bringing the cylinder forward, then moving it back and clipping it off again. Then swapping sides and doing the other side.

           · Completely removing a cylinder, putting it down, then putting it back on again.

           · Free flow drills and shutdowns.

           · Mask removal

           · Swapping to backup mask.

This didn’t go to badly, I struggled to clip my left cylinder off the first time but got there in the end, just need to work on my muscle memory.

After the skills we went for a little dive around and ended up with me putting a DSMB up. We then ascended, did our safety stop and got out the water.

After a quick debrief, we decided that I could try dropping 1Kg of weight, but other than that there was nothing that was really going to cause any issues.

           Dive 2:

This was mainly a repeat of the first dive, same skills but this time after the mask off drill Michael ran a short bit of line out so that I could practice mask switching while keeping contact with a line.

Both dives ran to about 40 mins, so not too bad.

After the second dive I got my cylinders filled ready for Friday and the first day of the Cavern diver course.

As Vobster’s COVID measures mean that you get either a morning or afternoon dive slot, we needed to be away from the main car park for 14:00. So, we headed off to their top car park to do the dry line laying that would normally be done on the morning of the cavern diver course. This meant we were not using up out dive time to do land drilled on Friday morning.

While I have used a reel in the past to run a line on a wreck in open water, I have never formally done any line laying. This was to be my first chance to run a reel properly for an overhead environment.

We started with Michael running the reel and explaining about primary tie off’s Secondary tie off’s and picking belays. Once this was demoed, we reeled back in and I got my chance to give it a go. The biggest take always for me where to keep the line tense, and to look ahead to pick a belay and think about the direction of travel after.

After running the reel, we put some line markers down and I got a stark reminder about sticking to the rule of thirds. Michael timed me walking the line with my eyes open, always keeping in touch contact. After this he got me to do the same again but this time with a blackout mask on. While it only took me 1:01 the first time, it took me 1:59 the second time. As this took almost double the amount of time that would have used almost all my spare 3rd of gas.

The final set of skills to go over where a lost diver and lost line drill. The reminder for this is that you just must keep trying to find the line if you lose it, and always put an arrow down when you leave the line to search for someone.

With all this done and packed away we went over my Theory test scores, Michael was happy with my answers and with that it was the end of the first day.
